A single gram of DNA could store 215 petabytes of digital information. So why hasn’t it been commercialized yet? Hi Product Hunt community, The world is producing data at an extraordinary rate. AI, cloud computing, genomics, video and billions of connected devices are increasing pressure on data centers already consuming enormous amounts of hardware, electricity, cooling and physical space. That pressure has pushed organizations including Microsoft and the University of Washington, CATALOG, Biomemory, Twist Bioscience, Seagate and research groups worldwide to explore molecular storage, particularly DNA. The attraction is remarkable: enormous amounts of information can be stored in tiny physical volumes and preserved for very long periods. But a major challenge remains. Most molecular storage systems are designed primarily for archiving information. Writing data requires molecular synthesis, while reading often involves sequencing and laboratory processing. These processes can take hours or even days. Slow READ/WRITE operations, limited concurrency and fragmented molecular-electronic interfaces make molecular storage difficult to use like conventional computer storage. That is the layer I attacked. I developed the Universal Molecular Digital Interface (UMDI), a medium-independent architecture connecting molecular storage operations with conventional computers through electronic caching, molecular addressing, parallel READ/WRITE pathways, scheduling, sensing, decoding and error correction. The work led to BioSSD, a Biological Solid-State Drive architecture designed to move molecular storage beyond archival applications toward active digital storage. I built the open-source UMDI Research Simulator to test this architecture. Researchers can simulate workloads, examine system bottlenecks, inspect the live transaction pathway, reproduce our published BioSSD benchmark and compare their own configurations. The published benchmark achieved simulated throughput of 869 MB/s READ and 894 MB/s WRITE using 4,096 parallel molecular channels. I released the simulator open source so researchers, engineers and companies working on next-generation storage can inspect the architecture, challenge the assumptions, reproduce the results and build on the work. Molecular storage has demonstrated extraordinary capacity. UMDI/BioSSD addresses the architecture needed to make that capacity accessible to conventional computers.
