I recently switched over to using primarily Claude and wanted to not lose all of my history that I built up over thousands of chats with OpenAI's ChatGPT.
Their download is pretty easy to do and quick. But unfortunately, what it gives you is a couple of massive HTML and JSON files that make it nearly impossible to really parse your chat history without loading it as a really slow website. So instead of calling it a loss, I created this GitHub project: Give Me Back My Chats.
It's a four-step process. Or five if you wanna get fancy.
1. Download your conversation history from ChatGPT
2. Download the Python file
3. Create a new markdown file
4. Run the Python file
*5. Take that new Markdown folder and put it into something like Obsidian so that you can hyperlink it to hell and back for searchability
If I were still going to use ChatGPT, I would probably do this on a regular basis anyways, just to keep an offline view of all my conversations. Especially recipes!
This project doesn't have any picture integration with it yet, so if you're interested in helping with that, would love to see a pull request.
