Unlike traditional file search that relies on filenames or keywords, Deep Search uses local AI to understand the meaning of your images and documents. Describe what you're looking for in everyday language to find text, scenes, people, objects, or specific sections within files. All AI processing runs entirely on your computer, keeping your files private. Deep Search supports files stored locally on your computer and directly connected external drives. NAS devices are currently not supported.
Hi Product Hunt! We're excited to introduce Synology Deep Search, a desktop application that helps you find images and documents using Local AI.
As our personal file collections continue to grow, finding the right file has become increasingly difficult. Traditional file search expects you to remember filenames, keywords, or where a file was saved. But that's rarely how people remember things. More often, we remember what a document was about, a scene in a photo, a person, or even a small detail.
That's why we built Deep Search.
Instead of matching keywords, Deep Search uses Local AI to understand the meaning of your images and documents. Simply describe what you remember in everyday language, and Deep Search helps you find the right content across documents and images. You can jump directly to relevant paragraphs, tables, charts, or embedded images within documents, or find photos by people, scenes, objects, recognized text, time, and location.
Privacy was a core design principle from day one. All indexing and AI processing happen entirely on your computer, so your files never leave your device and no cloud processing is required.
One thing we're particularly proud of is how Deep Search handles detailed, natural descriptions. Instead of limiting your search to a few keywords, you can describe what you remember the way you naturally would, and let the AI do the rest.
A quick note before you get started:
Deep Search currently works with local folders and directly connected external drives. NAS devices, shared network folders, and mapped network drives are not currently supported.
Since all AI processing runs locally, a supported Mac or Windows PC is required. Please check Deep Search system requirements before downloading.

How well does it handle large folders with thousands of mixed photos and PDFs, and is there any noticeable slowdown on older Synology NAS hardware?

At the moment, Deep Search doesn't support indexing files stored on a Synology NAS. Deep Search supports local folders on your computer and directly connected external drives only.
For supported folders, initial indexing performance depends on the size of your library and your computer's hardware. Once indexing is complete, only new or modified files are indexed automatically in the background.
How well does the local AI handle searching across huge photo libraries, and does indexing a big NAS volume noticeably slow down the system while it's running?

Deep Search doesn't support indexing files stored on NAS devices. It supports local folders on your computer and directly connected external drives.
For supported folders, resource usage during the initial indexing process depends on the size of your library and your computer's hardware. Once indexing is complete, only new or modified files are indexed automatically in the background.
Finally, search that actually understands what I'm looking for instead of just matching filenames. The on-device processing is a nice touch for keeping sensitive docs off the cloud.
