Hi Product Hunt. I'm John, and I built Skewt because I got tired of not having it.
A Skew-T Log-P sounding is an extremely useful tool for flying in weather. It plots temperature and dewpoint against pressure, and out of that you get cloud base, how high a thermal will climb, whether the day goes convective, and where the freezing level sits. Glider, paraglider and GA pilots can benefit greatly from using and understanding it.
On iOS there are good apps for this. On Android the maintained one died when its free data source went away, and what's left is either broken or a screenshot of someone else's blurry pre-rendered chart.
So Skewt draws the chart itself. Temperature and dewpoint on a real Skew-T grid, parcel path with CAPE and CIN shaded, adiabats, mixing ratio lines, wind barbs, and a crosshair you drag to read temperature, dewpoint, pressure, altitude and wind at any level. It's drawn on the phone rather than scraped as an image, so it stays sharp at any zoom and it responds to touch.
There are two kinds of sounding. Forecast works anywhere on earth. Tap the map, search a place, or use GPS, then scrub through the hours and watch the profile change. Observed is the actual balloon sounding from the nearest station, so you can check the model against the real atmosphere. Observed is North America only, because that's where the radiosonde network has coverage. A backend computes CAPE, CIN, LCL, LFC, freezing level and precipitable water with MetPy instead of approximating them on the phone.
It's built for the field, which mostly means it assumes the signal is bad. The last sounding you loaded is cached and readable offline, and cached data always says it's cached, with the time it came from. You should never be able to mistake stale data for live.
Being straight about the limits, because I'd rather you know now than find out after installing:
- Android only today. The iOS build isn't done and I'm not going to pretend otherwise.
- Observed soundings are North America only. Forecast soundings are worldwide.
- It's $9.99/year with a 14-day trial that starts on first launch. No account, no payment details, nothing to cancel if you walk away. The weather data costs money every month, so the app does too.
- It is a tool for people who already read soundings. It is not a flight briefing and not a substitute for an official aviation weather source.
Forecast data comes from Open-Meteo, observed radiosondes from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet, and maps from Mapbox. All three are credited in the app.
