Hey PH! 👋 Our new grad team interacts with recruiters everyday. I'm sure we've all felt it—that small migraine you get when a recruiter sends you an email titled "Awesome Opportunity!", is looking for someone with 60+ years of experience, and needs you to code in 0's and 1's. We sat down with a couple recruiters and tried to see where things were going wrong. We quickly realized that most recruiters are trying their best, and are truthfully working really hard to match candidates they believe are good fits. Unfortunately, it's just downright difficult for a non-technical person to evaluate an engineer. So, we built Sidewise; a chrome extension that helps recruiters evaluate GitHub profiles and reach out to quality candidates. What does Sidewise do? 💼 Evaluate a candidate's experience level 📚 Show the types of projects a candidate works on (ML, mobile, backend, etc.) 📋 Surface any unique developer insights about the candidate ✅ Display the most relevant projects 👯 Find any candidates who have similar experience 📨 Find top contributors and their emails (sorry ya'll!) for any repo This is our first step in trying to fix a small part of recruiting :) Feel free to try it out, and we will be forever in your debt if you share with a few recruiter friends! Even better if you're an engineer who thinks our algorithms misrepresent your profile—we're still fine-tuning so please do share your thoughts!

Looks pretty nice actually. Although I'm not sure why it has to be a chrome extension. I'm always reluctant to install any extensions.. Although I'm a coder, and not a recruiter, so what do I know :) btw. why not also provide a way for engineers to showcase their profile? I assume if you do it cool they might share it to recruiters themselves.. ;) I always like service like ohloh.net or sourcerer.io which give an insight into my own history.. (although i'm not sure how much I'd pay for it.. but It would be a cool thing to share for on a resume).. fwiw, why not include stackoverflow while you are at it 😅️

@herbertpoul Appreciate the comment Herbert! We wanted to start off with some low hanging fruit and just improve the info a recruiter might see right from GitHub, first. That being said, definitely looking into how we might help engineers showcase themselves off in a more personalized way next.

Hey ya'll! Wanted to address the elephant in the room... Is a GitHub profile able to tell me everything about a candidate? No! This is our main concern that we want to make sure to address. Recruiters will use LinkedIn to evaluate candidates until the end of time. But, we quickly realized that nearly every recruiter looks at GitHub, but no one is able to discern any useful information. It's hard enough to read someone else's code as a technical person! So, we're analyzing and organizing the public info available on GitHub, and are looking to build a candidate experience and open up the path towards analyzing private projects in a non-intrusive way. This is cool but I wanted to point out that every candidate used in an example screenshot is a white man. Just something I think companies, especially companies related to recruiting, need to be cognizant about.

I really didn't get it, and there many bumps in the way to see the demo.. I didn't! Please include a video here on page, it would be better. 1. It has a login popup which didn't look authentic (even when I was logged in) 2. Direct option to upgrade is a direct kill than showing the feature first. 3. I went to linkedin but I didn't see any change, finally uninstalled the extension. :[

@tech10ment Hey tech! Appreciate the feedback—you're right, the high level premise of the tool isn't quite clear. Our onboarding hopes to guide recruiters directly to a GitHub profile to immediately see the value Sidewise provides, but there are a few areas where that flow can go wrong. Could you elaborate when you say "It has a login popup which didn't look authentic (even when I was logged in)"?
