You're welcome, @oscaralexander! What brought this about? What have been some of the better trolls you've seen? Care to share anything about how it works under the hood?
Damn! Wanted to post this but @staringispolite beat me!
This is made by my close friend @oscaralexander, Lead Designer at The Next Web. Perhaps he can jump into the comments @rrhoover ?
@staringispolite Everyone loves a good prank, right? I had this idea, followed by a working prototype 2 hours later. Then spent the rest of the day on the artwork, perfecting the parser (i.e. asset path and OpenGraph tag replacement) and implementing the Bit.ly API. I've made the source available here: http://cl.ly/1e1L2T0b1V2T/downlo...
In a nutshell, it works like this:
1. Suck in all HTML from the provided URL
2. Make all relative paths absolute based on provided URL domain
3. Set A, LI, P, H1 - H6 elements to contenteditable="true"
4. Save the entire (edited) HTML source to the database with an AJAX request
5. Update the OpenGraph data and title tag to reflect text and image changes
6. Generate unique URL and Bit.ly URL
One brilliant SHRTURL creation that got shared a lot was this one: http://shrturl.co/sAa5f :)
Founder reporting for duty. Thanks for the share @staringispolite!
@rrhoover That's a great compliment, thanks! Be sure to share your (public) creations on /r/shrturl :)
The site has been down for a few days because the hosting provider of SHRTURL's new owner wasn't very happy with the site sending over 150 emails per hour. We're now using Mandrill for emailing and are back in business for your trolling and professional needs!
