Hi Product Hunt, I'm Casper, founder of Rool.
Rool is built on one idea: if you hand an AI your real work, that work should live somewhere that's yours.
Every user gets their own Rool Machine, a private Linux computer in the cloud with the AI running inside it. Your files, chats and memory stay there, walled off from everyone else. It remembers last week's work, runs software, handles multi-step tasks, and you can invite your team into the same machine. Web, iPhone and Android.
What is unique about Rool
- Not a wrapper: We run our own AI models.
- Your data is stored in Finland, under Irish and EU law
- Never used to train AI
- No ads. No data sales. No cookies or tracking pixels on rool.dev
- Export your data at any time
Free forever: no card, 2 machines with 1 GB each, credits that refill every hour.
What would it take for you to trust an AI with your real work? We're here all day.
I use Rool for everything I wanted to used to use AI tools for but didn't want to because of privacy issues and simply not wanting my data to be used for training.
Handling tedious text-oriented tasks, giving me a leg up in research, summarizing chaotic content and, yes, the occasional "hey how would my hair look with a bit trimmed on the side". But now it remembers context, it keeps memories and files, and they are secure.
In addition, it is important to me that it is is run and hosted in the EU as that, at least in my mind, adds another layer of commitment to privacy.
I need it only a few times a day, so it makes sense to me to rather pay a small subscription rather to invest into an elaborate and expensive self-hosted solution.
@zarko_kuvalja Thank you! Yes we try to be the middle ground between the ultimate control of a self-hosted AI, and a cloud solution: A personal computer in the cloud where we run enough of the stack (GPU is the important one here) to make the privacy guarantees we do. Cheers!
I created an account on Producthunt, purely to thank the creators of Rool for this tool. I received an email asking me to share my thoughts on their product. and having never commented on a product in the past, I felt compelled to share my thoughts on this virtual machine. It's the first experience I have that is not filled with vague hallucinations and a great memory tracking of all threads. It simply works like it should!
I use Rool every day, and I believe in their values, but I don't feel like I give up performance as a trade off.
Thank you Casper and thank you Rool team:)
Do you have any plans of offering Rool on private servers?
@teo_oet Thank you for walking that extra mile for us! Regarding private servers, its a consideration we often have. The machine itself is rather easy to host anywhere, but the issue is the inference. Few people can actually run the kind of models that are needed to power Rool.
My long term hope is that a Rool machine can someday be physical device, inference and all, but that is still far from techically feasible
I can genuinely recommend Rool. I’ve used it for a few months now as a personal assistant keeping track of my different life projects like house renovation, applications/legal stuff and other more longterm goals. I like to drip information to Rool so it over time updates each project and reminds me of what to do next.
One of the main reasons I use Rool is that it’s private and hosted in EU, so no foreign billionaires can misuse my data.
The machine you access only does things when you ask it to, which took a little getting used to. But now I usually check in daily, ask about the status and get things done. It’s actually less stressful than an app that constantly pings you for feedback.
All in all a really useful tool and I highly recommend trying it out.
Martin
@fragnite Thanks for the support, Martin! Hope the renovation is closer to done than the paperwork!
I really enjoy using Rool. I am quite sceptical of AI in general and care a lot about privacy. I mainly use AI for assisting with coding in statistical software, and Rool has been so much better than what I have experienced with other LLMs. It is much more consistent throughout and across conversations. It actually remembers what previous conversations and prompts concluded. The one thing I enjoy most about Rool is that it feels less like a "yes man", that constantly appraises me and tries to convince me that my ideas are great. In my experience, Rool is much more critical and "pessimistic" in its answers than what I have experienced with other LLMs. That is exactly what I need in scientific research: critical review and opposition.
@lasse_berntsen Thanks for noticing that Rool is less of a yes-man! We really triy to make it that way. All AI models have a tencency to wanting to please. I guess its best for retention, but in the long run I think that messes with the user's world view in an unhealthy way. So part of being a responsible AI provider is to at least attempt to dampen that tendency.
@wilstrup Agreed! I would much rather have the AI challenge the inevitable preconceived understanding and bias in my prompt. Great work, thank you!
let me join the choir :0). I do this because I also did not know about Rool, but a tech friend gave me a tip, and I could not be happier. I schwitched from chatGPT to Claude since the former was giving me ethical issues. Now I dont trust claude either but I needed to work with Ai for some projects. Now I tried ROOL and it has for sure been my daily driver and I will upgrade my account soon. It soo exiting that startup exists that are founded with the same concerns european users have. Privacy, data integrity etc. I am unclear to where the quality of answers and inputs still are better with say claude, but I continue to explore this. I hope, hope hope that Rool can keep up quality, and be a real alternative. As a user the only thing that would hold me back, is the feeling of loosing valuable input, by using a less capable Ai, but the privacy and europe angle is HUGE, so I will surely highly highly recommend you trying out Rool, and thx to the developers. And yes I also never do reviews when asked to do so, but for this project it was a no-brainer, they absolutely deserve it :09
@jakob_hojer_kristensen Thank you for trusting Rool, and for being here today. We will do our best to make Rool match up to the American giants, while doubling down on our unique advantages which their business model just wont let them copy.
Cheers,
Casper
What attracted me to Rool initially was the principles behind the project: hosted in EU, privacy focused and by a team of people I believed in based on my knowledge of Abzu. Since then, Rool has been my go to LLM.
I keep coming back to Rool because while my data is not being exploited the quality of the answers are at least on pair with any other machine I've worked with and in some cases better. Some use cases for me have been: all kinds of text work, html code, image generations, research, project planning. I really like the core memory concepts as a way of personalising the machine and I'm looking forward to work more with the graph. I also really like transparency you get by looking into what the machine is doing to generate answers.
All in all i recommend Rool wholeheartedly.
@magnus_boye Thank you, Magnus. Yes, we really are trying to be the AI the world is missing. The one that doesnt make a business model out of the user's lives and work, but just makes it about delivering great AI.
And building a machine with all the self-intospectuion you have notices has also been an immense amount of fun. I hope Rool keeps living up to your expectations.
