We made RightGIF as a drop-in replacement for Giphy in Slack. We got super annoyed with the inappropriate (and often offensive) GIFs popping up in our team's channels. RightGIF is designed to just get the Right GIF for your chosen meme or phrase. We hope you like it!
@chrismessina Giphy is tag based and "crowd sourced". It returns one of any number of matching GIFs based on tags. We use a search algorithm which finds the "most likely" intended GIF and display that.
Just one gif per phrase seems a little bit sad though. I like putting the same word in twice and seeing what giphy comes back with. Perhaps an area to expand if this takes off?
@stef We specialise in trying to get you the "right" GIF. The more variation we add, the more random it becomes. So it's a bit of a trade off. We see RightGIF as more of a replacement for emotes. "hold on to your butts", "I'll be back", "woah", "fingers crossed"... that sort of thing. Works especially well with movie quotes :)
Report
I really wanted to love this but the first thing we noticed was it only has one response per phrase. (We use /gif 'dance' all the time when someone plays good music in our DJ site, and there's just one dancing skeleton.) I'm sure you guys will build up the library though, so I'll keep the integration for now!
@designsellout Yeah for right now we're focused getting the most suitable gif. We have plans to allow up/down voting, "tired of this gif" type things. We're also adding a lot of configuration options so you will be able to change the "randomness", enable nsfw etc for example.
@alandownie@designsellout we noticed a similar issue with Hitlist's chrome extension, @wandertab, which used to only have one photo per city (for the uninitiated, Wandertab is a chrome extension that shows you a beautiful picture of a city and how much it costs to get there every time you open a new tab) - we began to see a bunch of churn around month 3 of use and the #1 reason people cited was that they were tired of seeing the same images. Good news is you have around two months to build up a nice library :)
@gillianim@designsellout good info, thanks for sharing! We're definitely seeing different usage behaviour amongst different people. Just need to work out whether people use the same term because they want to consistency, or whether we need to mix it up. Thanks for the feedback!
this is definitely the best gif experience on slack! Unless you love laughing when giphy shows something totally unrelated to your input! But so much better than giphy in my opinion!
This is so much better than the Giphy plug in. Always took about 3 attempts using Giphy to get a good/appropriate image. Productivity has already improved.
I was very excited to try this, but the first two gifs I searched for were somewhat disappointing. "installed" and "not so exciting after all". But "oh well" was on point. Thanks for making this.
