Peerby (TechStars London) founded by @dwed allows neighbors to lend each other stuff.
I used their service last weekend to lend a laser rangefinder. I was initially bearish the request would actually get any responses, but within 20 minutes I had a match (they say that is actually the average time it takes). A meetup ensued, I got all the measurements of my house, and a day later returned it. Now I'm a fan.
There is no insurrance on the lending (unlike e.g. airbnb) but it's also currently free.
They are a Dutch company. Not sure how their international roll-out looks like.
Is anything like this already available in the US?
@yvoschaap, I haven't heard of anything quite like this for physical objects in the US. I signed up in Oakland, CA and was the first of 20 in my neighborhood, and I'm out of town for another month so I won't try to hustle to get more people using it.
Love the concept though.
