What became possible in your product with Astra that was not practical before?

Astra made it practical for me to build and release Oulie, a free native Mac app for live captions and on-device translation, even though desktop development is not my professional background. Rust's complexity, debugging GPUI, and bridging Rust with Swift through C FFI were challenges I would have struggled to tackle alone. Designing AppKit interfaces and animations in Swift added another layer of unfamiliar work. Astra helped me work through these challenges and understand the tradeoffs. I also used Astra to run many experiments and compare speech recognition and translation models. These experiments guided improvements to UI responsiveness and recognition accuracy, while helping reduce memory use and CPU overhead. Beyond making the app possible, Astra made development a continuous learning process. I gained practical experience with unfamiliar systems, learned to test assumptions through experiments, and built the confidence to ship something useful and free for everyone.
