Hi Product Hunt! 👋
I'm the solo developer behind OtterZip. Most archive tools I tried on Windows felt dated, or came with ads, nag screens and bundled offers. I just wanted something that does one thing quietly: right-click a file and it's zipped, right-click an archive and it's out.
So I built OtterZip:
• Compress and extract straight from the Explorer right-click menu, without opening the app
• Creates ZIP, 7z, TAR and TAR.GZ, and extracts ZIP, 7z, RAR, TAR, GZ, BZ2, XZ, ZST, ISO, CAB and more
• AES-256 encryption and split archives when you need them
• Built-in protection against zip bombs and malicious paths
• A Rust engine for the heavy lifting and a native WinUI 3 interface, in 10 languages
• No ads, no accounts, no tracking. Crash reports are opt-in and off by default
It's completely free and open source (GPL-3.0). You can get it from the Microsoft Store or download it from GitHub.
Fun fact: the same Rust engine now powers archive browsing in SPAN Finder, my Miller Columns file manager for Windows.
I'd love your feedback: what would make you switch from the archiver you use today?
