Ten years ago, my life partner and I realized that we were each other's polar opposite, and it couldn't have felt more right. That was the moment we realized that the phrase "opposites attract" had genuine merit to it, specifically, how Yin and Yang works in our day to day life. The idea all stemmed from our obsession with Avatar, The Last Airbender's TV series. I identified as a Fire bender and my partner was absolutely a Water bender. But how did we know that so innately? And how do we put it into quantifiable traits? So, we described the traits of someone you might describe as - 🔥 Fire: Passion, Strength, Momentum, Chaos - 💧 Water: Calm, Healing, Flow, Order - 🌪️ Air: Spontaneous, Carefree, Presence, Fun - 🏔️ Earth: Steady, Stable, Firm, Peaceful So, we made it into reality. It only took five years of development but we think we've nailed down the personality traits that make you, you. Armed with that knowledge, we made a dating app that matches you up with your equal, but opposite. The concept: - Yin and Yang style matching equal but opposites - Four elements, four seasons, two adjectives that describe personality. - Pokemon card style profile previews (front/back) - Myspace level profile customizations (add favorite songs, profile customizations, etc) - Party game style icebreakers (Never have I ever, Would you rather, 2 truth 1 lie, etc) But you may ask: why did it take so much Claude usage for such a simple dating app concept? Because we refused to cut the corners a new app is supposed to cut. We wanted to launch worldwide on day one, because love has no boundaries. The entire app runs in 15 languages, and when your match speaks a different one, chats translate right inside the app: they write in French, you read it in English. We wanted the opposite of the industry's business model. The big dating apps profit off of loneliness; the longer you stay single, the more they make. OtherHalf has vowed, for the entirety of its life: No Subscriptions, EVER. Free for everyone to use, and any purchase is a lifetime purchase. We wanted a profile that's actually yours. Your card can be tuned down to the palette, banner, glow, font, and animated effect, with your favorite songs and your stories on it, because nobody falls in love with a stock template. And we wanted it to deserve your trust. An app built this fast, with AI, has to earn that the hard way. So I spent months on the unglamorous half: debugging, auditing our own security the way an attacker would and patching what we found, and encrypting sensitive personal data so it isn't sitting readable on a server. I want our beta testers to push this app to its limits, so reporting any issue is as simple as it gets: shake your screen, anywhere.
