Recently I've been trying different ways of improving my productivity and concentration by using ambient sound mobile apps. While most of them were fine and did their job, I had 2 main concerns:
- Most of them depend on active internet connection for streaming audio and displaying different popups (ads, in-app purchase promotion, some sort of newsletters). Even if the app had some sort of offline mode support, those blank screens and error popups were annoying. Also once I had a situation where I downloaded the app right before the plane flight, and opened it for the first time while I was already in the air without internet access - app couldn't do anything before predownloading some sounds for later offline playback, so I had tough time trying to focus on working during that flight.
- They all sound the same after week one - after getting used to one specific app, even by switching different audio modes, the core sounds are really similar. While that may be the point of playing ambient sounds in the background, I wanted it to be a bit less neutral and with a bit more character to it.

That's how I came up with an idea of creating yet another ambient sound focus app - Orbitone. It generates all ambient sound layers entirely on-device - once you download the app you're all set. Its theme is based around space - it is meant to make you feel like you're alone on an abonded spaceship drifting in orbit. And talking about that twist I mentioned earlier - those ambient sounds are overlayed with occasional astronauts speaking through the radio, which are also generated locally on-device only (both the script and the actual sound).

Few things I've focused on:
- 100% offline - no internet connection is required for app to function, everything is being generated on-device
- Binaural beats frequency tuned for sustained focus, layered with other types of generative ambient sounds
- AI-generated astronaut voice lines, each one is unique
- Generated sound can be customized by toggling sound layers

Future plans:
- Different languages support for astronaut communication
- Customizable thematics - for example, airplane sounds with flight attendants and captain talking
- Adjustable tone of conversations - friendly, neutral, aggressive
- More sounds customization options (for example, changing binaural beats frequency)
- Presets for different purposes - deep focus, relax, falling asleep
- User statistics - for example "you've listened n sessions for n hours, that's 0.34% of an earth orbit!"

Would love to hear your feedback, especially on the sound design and whether the voice-over layer feels like a cool addition that helps you focus and adds to the natural background sound, or if it ends up being more distracting than helpful. 😅
