Hi everyone,
I am very happy to announce the launch of Opal — probably the only diary app that is truly owned by you.
I love journaling, and I truly believe capturing moments for the future is such a romantic way to live. But I've always worried about vendor lock-in with diary apps. For me, diary should last forever — yet most apps mean your entries could vanish if the app gets deprecated.
I adore Obsidian's philosophy. I even tried using it for daily notes, but it's a general note-taking app, not built specifically for journaling. That's when the idea hit me: Why not build a diary version of Obsidian?
And that's exactly what I did — Opal!

Opal gives you a clean, diary-focused UI, but stores every entry as Markdown files. Save them locally or in iCloud—either way, you can open them anytime in the Files app. The best part? With iCloud sync, edit your diary right from your computer is not impossible—It’s just a markdown!
Privacy is everything to me. Therefore, all your data stays on your device or iCloud—I never see a single entry. And I promise, while a paid tier for advanced features may come later, core journaling will always be free, with no ads ever!
I built Opal for my needs — but I believe I'm not alone in wanting a private diary app that truly lasts. If you are with me, give it a try!
