Does the 5.1 surround sound actually work on a phone speaker or do you need to pair it with headphones or a car audio system for the full effect?
@ege1553855 It works on any device, including a phone’s built-in speakers. The 5.1 mix is automatically downmixed by Android, so you still get a well-balanced stereo experience. For the full immersive effect, though, it’s best experienced on a home theater, Android TV with surround sound, or an Android Automotive vehicle with a premium multi-speaker audio system. That’s actually one of the reasons I built it—to make the most of the incredible audio hardware modern cars already have. 🔥
How well does the 5.1 surround mix actually hold up over car speakers or just typical phone stereo, since most people aren't running a real surround setup in those environments?
@grselkalpcztqo The 5.1 mix is authored as discrete surround channels, but Android automatically downmixes it depending on the playback device.
On a phone, it becomes a balanced stereo mix. On Android TV or home theater systems with surround support, you get the full 5.1 experience. In modern EVs with premium multi-speaker audio systems (AKG, Bowers & Wilkins, Harman Kardon, Bose, etc.), the effect is noticeably more immersive than a regular stereo track, even though every car processes multichannel audio a bit differently.
The goal wasn’t to force surround everywhere, but to provide the best possible experience on every device while letting capable systems really shine.
genuine question, not trying to be a downer, is this locked to only play when the car is parked/charging? a full HD fireplace video on the dash display while actually driving seems like a real distraction risk, curious how you're handling that on the automotive side vs just phone/TV
@galdayan Great question! And I completely agree—that would be a distraction.
On Android Automotive OS, the fireplace video is only available while the vehicle is parked. Once the car starts moving, the app automatically switches to a driving-safe mode and the video is disabled, in line with Google’s Android for Cars requirements.
The idea was never to entertain the driver while driving, but to make charging stops and waiting in the car feel a bit more cozy. 🙂
The Android TV and phone versions, of course, don’t have those restrictions.
Played one of the scenes on my TV and the crackling audio actually tricked my dog into checking the room. Nice touch having everything work offline too.
@nazmiyebaysytm I love hearing that! 😄 If it convinced your dog there was a real fire nearby, I guess the sound design did its job. Offline playback was a must from day one, especially for cars where connectivity isn’t always reliable. Thanks for trying it!
