Many seem like clear rip offs of (or more generously: inspirations from?) actual brands in the wild — for example "Luminous" is a rip off of Luma. How do you avoid infringing on other people's IP?

@chrismessina Hello Chris, thank you for the feedback we appreciate it. We do our best to search and avoid any of the situations where the logos on “logo to use” are “rip-offs” of other and existing brands it is our priority and we will stand by it. The example you share might look similar but if you look at the full mark you will see they have very little income aside from the “shine mark” that we created just a negative space on the rounded corners box. One could say that the “shine” symbol is universal and doesn’t belong to anyone but that's another discussion. However, if the company Luma sees it as a rip-off we are more than happy to talk to them and see how we can solve it. It is not uncommon in the brand world for a logo to look similar to another but we are happy to assist any of those situations Best regards

@bardhylbytyci sorry but, "One could say that the “shine” symbol is universal and doesn’t belong to anyone but that's another discussion." is actually exactly the discussion. This is the foundation of trademark — whether a mark could be confused for someone else's. To suggest that "luma" and "luminous" are just coincidentally similar, with a similar starburst, feels a bit dismissive. But look, I'm not trying to call you out. I do see that you have several nice looking, probably non-infringing marks in your offering, and I think that's cool. I think it'd also be cool if you said something like, "Inspired by X" or something — that would feel aligned with, say, the spirit of Creative Commons, and set the expectation that these marks are meant to inspire, rather than to be used, as you suggest, like photos from Unsplash. As someone who "community marked" the BarCamp logo and put it into the hands of the community — I support creating derivative marks. But I also think people should know what they're actually getting, and what expectations they should have when they use work that's offered as "Free".
