@mm good point, Morgan. We've changed the tagline 3 times now and I still don't think what we have now is perfect. While we encourage brand new products, sometimes older lesser known products get a lot of love. We're trying to find the right balance as "new" and "undiscovered" are subjective. Shoot me a note if you have any ideas! ryan[at]ryanhoover.me
@rrhoover I vote for one of those nags that says "This product is over 2 years old", ala the WordPress plugin directory. I don't want to ban old stuff, but I feel it's somehow important that folks know that it's old.
(if for no other reason that to prevent someone from sending a 5 year old link to his team and being ridiculed)

@guygal A six year old website isn't a new product, just like a six year old car isn't a new car, even if it's "new to you." You wouldn't put a six year old car in a new car lot, and there shouldn't be six year old websites directly under a "best new products" heading. The concern here is quality. If people are given the impression years-old deprecated and somewhat unpopular products are new and best, then show them to their friends only to be embarrassed (@clarklab made a great point here) people will stop coming to Product Hunt, or use something else that enforces quality or at least consistency.

@rrhoover It's very interesting that Product Hunters aren't shy about pointing out a product that isn't new (or isn't really a product) but are still happy to upvote. Everyone loves discovering great products even if they're older (for example, I wanted to add f.lux but it was already here), yet seeing LMGTFY at the top of a "best new products" leaderboard does somewhat take away from its reliability and authority - which seem essential for this type of community.
I'm just thinking out loud here. Social voting is a big part of the product I'm working on and I use the tagline "find and decide the best of everything," which I worry sounds too much like a discovery or review engine than a social product. Anyway, if you want to stick with a "best new products" tagline, I think @clarklab has the right idea of adding some metadata to indicate when a product is an exception to the tagline.
