I tried Ketchup ~6 months ago when it was focused on creating plans with friends. Looks like they heavily simplified the product. Reminds me of Path. cc @davemorin
It was hard enough to get my entire extended family on GroupMe - the switching costs are super high. I wonder how many people agree with this: "I want to see things like when my nephew is off to kindergarten, or my sister is cooking something, or my girlfriend is studying at a café." (from the launch article)
A great way to do this is start on some of the more exclusive college campuses and roll it out campus-by-campus, keeping the networks tight and exclusive. Then you could extend it out to people outside those tight networks, giving users the ability to connect with family and other friends, and then acquire a popular photo sharing app, and then....oh, wait.

Ryan mentioned having tried it out before—but it turns out he had tried Ketchuppp (http://ketchuppp.com/) instead. This Ketchup definitely wasn't around 6 months ago. :)
