I built Kalydoscope View out of frustration with how slow and cluttered most image viewers feel when you’re actually trying to work with images, not just look at them.
As a filmmaker and VFX artist, I constantly deal with folders full of frames, references, renders, and stills. The workflow is always the same: open a folder, go through hundreds of images, pick the good ones, and move on. But most tools either felt too heavy (full asset managers) or too basic (just next/previous viewing with no real selection flow).
I wanted something that felt instant. Open a folder and start moving. No setup, no indexing, no waiting.
The core idea became very simple:
1. Fast navigation
2. Mark favorites instantly
3. Filter to only the good ones
4. Export them in one step
That’s it.
During development, the biggest shift was actually removing things rather than adding them. Early versions had more buttons, more UI, more structure. But every time I used it, I felt the friction. So I kept stripping it down until it felt like the tool disappeared and only the workflow remained.
What you see now is very intentional:
1. Minimal UI
2. Keyboard-first interaction
3. Local, offline, no accounts or cloud
4. Designed for speed over features
This is just the starting point. I’m already exploring:
1. RAW support
2. Grouping similar shots
3. Smarter selection workflows
Would love to hear how people use it and what would make it even faster or more useful for your workflow.
