Jaut is a free, local-first Mac and Windows app built for restless minds. Capture thoughts, ideas, and inspiration the moment they appear and find them effortlessly. No juggling windows. No deciding which folder a thought sits in. With one keyboard shortcut, Jaut appears over whatever you're doing, ready to capture your next great idea or find a past one. Every "Jaut" is saved locally as a Markdown file on your device.

Hey Product Hunt! 👋
I'm an engineer, a naturally curious person, and someone who always seems to have a new idea running through my head. Today, I'm excited to share Jaut, the first app I've seriously built for myself and now want to share with others!
Here's why I built it.
I'd be working on something, going about my day, or in the middle of a completely unrelated task when an idea would pop into my head.
I'd grab whatever was easiest. A piece of paper, an email to myself, Apple Notes. Whatever helped me get the thought down before it disappeared.
But over time, I realized something.
Capturing ideas wasn't my only problem. Finding them again was.
My thoughts were scattered everywhere. And even with great apps like Apple Notes and Obsidian, I often found myself thinking about where a note should go before I even wrote it.
Which folder? How am I going to find this later? You know how it is.
Sometimes, that little bit of friction was enough to stop me from capturing the thought altogether.
So I built Jaut, a free, local-first desktop app designed to make capturing and finding thoughts as effortless as possible.
Here's how it works:
Instant capture: Press Ctrl + [ , ] from anywhere, type your thought, hit Enter, and get right back to what you were doing.
Keyboard-first: Capture and search without reaching for your mouse.
No folders on purpose: No need to decide where something belongs before saving it.
Quick retrieval: Search through all your captured thoughts in one place.
Local-first: Every note is saved as a Markdown file on your own device.
My goal was simple: Make capturing a thought so easy that Jaut naturally becomes the place I turn to whenever an idea strikes.
I'm starting with desktop because that's where I spend most of my day. But my bigger vision is to make all "Jaut's" available on all desktop and mobile platforms with sync .
Mobile app support, E2EE Sync, a browser web clipper, and eventually even a dedicated, distraction-free note-taking device are all in the roadmap.
This is my first serious app launch, and I'm excited (and a little nervous!) to put it out into the world.
Jaut is completely free, and I'd genuinely love to hear your thoughts, especially on the desktop experience.
One question I'd love to ask everyone here:
Where do your random thoughts and ideas end up today, and how do you find them again?
Thanks for checking out Jaut! 🙌
