Moving in with my girlfriend shortly and was looking for something like this the other, it's a shame it's limited to US only! I suspect that's due to connecting to bank accounts, though. Are you looking to open this up to other countries later?
I also have this question. Is the app only functional if you connect to your (US) bank account? I'm happily manually managing our finances with another app but would love to try this out.
Report
@antoneliasson which app are you using? Is that country bound as well? I'm looking for something that could be downloaded in the UK.
I'm not sure I understand this correctly.
I'm using a joint account with my gf and it seems to me that it Just Works™
What pain is Honeydue relieving compared to a joint account?
Report
@gflandre setting up a joint account seems to be more of a hassle than downloading an app.
Report
@max_de_vos It's a one time thing, so a very limited hassle.
When set up, all recurring bills (electricity, rent etc.) are automatically split.
What's the workflow for paying rent with Honeydue?
And I'm curious to know if Honeydue allows to refund your partner for a given expense. If not, that would be even more work.
Report
@max_de_vos@gflandre Most households have several bank accounts, both individual and joint, including loans, savings, brokerages, etc - we're tackling the problem of seeing all of them at once, to see the big picture of your combined finances, in addition to other activities like paying your bills on time.
Report
@thien_tran +1, it's exactly why I'm really into the app. We've got joint accounts, but also individual accounts, individual debts, individual investments through employers, etc. Having it ALL in an easy-to-view way has been awesome.
Great idea! Are the Bills just for reminding, or can I actually pay them from the app?
Same with the "shared' expenses - does the payment actually go from one bank to the other through the app?
Report
@sidsriramoju We're just getting started here, but we are eyeing the ability to pay your bills through the app. As for "shared expenses", we don't provide transfer functionality yet, but the hope is that with our app, you shouldn't have to continually transfer money back and forth with your partner - just keep tabs on who owes whom, and if you currently owe your partner some amount, then you pay for dinner next time :)

Just curious where the data from this is stored and how it's protected? Also what do you plan to do with our data that you glean from us through us?
Love the app idea and name. It has a lot of meaning for my wife and I.
@the_real_jw Thanks Jeff! We're using a service Plaid which securely connects to your banks. Your financial identity and privacy are important to us, so we encrypt everything at rest and in transit. We hope to use your data to do two things: 1) provide you with useful, timely tips on ways to save money, and 2) target offers from partners that we think will help you save money as well.

This looks promising. I keep track of all our finances on my phone, but I have to install/manage each of our financial institutions' apps separately. Wife is not going to operate at such levels. We use a shared calendar to keep track of bills, and daily emails to keep track of balances. This could replace all of that.
Two questions: 1) What's your coverage of importing from financial institutions? 2) Could I use something like Mint.com's app to do the same?
Report
@hellogerard Great questions! We cover 10,000+ US banks. We differ from Mint in regards to how couples want to share. Many couples don't want to share everything - they often have their own individual spending accounts which they don't want to squabble over. Mint requires you to share everything, so it doesn't allow you to to protect that autonomy. Other advantages: you can hide that surprise anniversary gift from your partner, you can remind each other about bills, you can easily ping your partner about a questionable transaction, or celebrate your partner's payday with an emoji - check it out we'd love to hear what you think!

Looks super promising! Well done.
Any plans on adding some manual controls? For example, manually creating budgets or manually adding transactions to the activity section?
Right now my wife and I use a hybrid mix of Mint (to get the whole big picture automatically) and Goodbudget (so we can manage a weekly spending budget--it's manual, but faster than waiting for pending transactions to clear). Honeydue looks like it could bring the two together for us at some point!
Report
@_layton_ Thanks for sharing your use case! Adding accounts manually is definitely on our short list. Adding transactions is a little tricky - would you want to add them to accounts that are linked to a bank already, or just manually-added accounts? And if it's a placeholder for a pending transaction, do you have to delete it when its been posted?
Report
@thien_tran awesome! And not sure if you were asking for additional thoughts on my particular use case, but I'd definitely prefer to have a manual transaction paired + merged automatically with a matching transaction once it posts. Agree that it's tricky. And probably a fringe use case for your users.
