Grain genuinely nails what it set out to do: let you actually listen and engage during meetings instead of furiously typing like you're in a court hearing. The real magic happens with the transcription—it's crisp, accurate, and clips itself beautifully. What really impressed me was the ability to take time-stamped notes and turn them into actual clips within the meeting.

I sat through a sales call where I marked three key moments without breaking eye contact, and by the time the meeting ended, I had three shareable 30-second clips ready to send to the team. It felt like the app was taking notes with me, not for me. The AI summaries aren't trying to be philosophers either—they get straight to the point: decisions made, action items, who said what. That's the stuff that actually matters.

What needs improvement

The one genuine frustration I hit was video sharing. If someone in the meeting had a screen recording or a video snippet they wanted to share, Grain records the audio but can't do much with the video file itself. It's understandable from a technical perspective, but when you're in a client meeting where a video demo is part of the conversation, you lose that visual context in your recording.

Also, the integration ecosystem could be deeper. I wanted to push summaries automatically to Slack for my team, but it requires some extra setup. It's not complicated, but it's one more step when you want things to just work.

vs Alternatives

Before settling on Grain, I looked at Fathom and some of the heavier competitors like Fireflies.ai. Fathom is solid for basic note-taking, but Grain's clip feature is something special that you don't get elsewhere. It's a small detail, but clipping mid-conversation without stopping to think about where the clip starts and ends makes a real difference when you're managing a large team spread across time zones.

The free tier on Grain also doesn't feel like you're getting a watered-down experience—it actually covers real use cases. That was refreshing compared to tools that gate everything behind a paywall from day one.

My favorite tool of the category, and always my go-to. Great for UX research, and sales / discovery calls. Solid, great, smooth, thoughtful interface plus I've been super impressed with the new AI features - summarization, etc.

What needs improvement

I miss the in-meeting note-taker. I'm not sure why they removed it, but it was a really helpful way to call out important moments during the interview.

Grain has been a game-changer for my meetings. I’ve tried a bunch of other recorders, and what I really like about Grain is its ability to let me chat with the AI using my meeting transcripts to get quick clarifications. I also appreciate that I can customize what’s displayed while recording meetings, so everything looks more on-brand and professional. And I’m a huge fan of Clips, which lets me take time-stamped notes during the meeting. That way, any action items can be captured on the spot, and if another team member needs more details on how to execute them, they can quickly reference that part of the call to get all the context. Been using it for a year and not looking back!

With so many solutions out there to choose from, to include those provided natively inside of the video conferencing tools, this has proven to win out time and again. It's easy to judge the difference when I get summaries from Zoom, Fireflies, Grain and possibly a few others in a large meeting. The detail, the actions, the summaries alone make even missing a meeting a real option because you don't even need to watch the meeting recording -- just read the notes and confidently know what was discussed (and what actions you were assigned since you weren't there!!). I love the new meeting notes that happen even when it hasn't joined the call directly. Granted -- no video sharing is included for obvious reasons but this is a functionality that, out of the gate, has proved to be incredibly valuable. This space is crowded and new options seem to pop up weekly. But I'm confident the team at Grain will continue to advance this.

Grain is an amazing tool for recording sales meetings. They are continuously bringing out amazing features. It can automatically update my fields in HubSpot, send the recording link to HubSpot. This is all done by analysing the calls and developing AI notes to insert. It also has its own MCP server that allows me to connect ChatGPT and query all of our calls! Amazing stuff. We moved from Gong and have not looked back.

Incredible for video clips. At the end of a meeting, I can highlight the section of the transcript that I want to turn into a video clip. It immediately gives me a link that I can share on slack to show the team or send to client. I love that I can even download video clips and post them on my testimonial page.
