I made this new thing called Gliglish. Here's the problem I had, and the solution I thought of:
🤔 Problem
The problem is that if I study a language but wait for months or even years before I speak it, it's gonna suck. I'll feel too intimidated to ever open my mouth and it's only gonna get worse with time. I teach English and see a ton of students focus too much on grammar rules and vocabulary lists, but they struggle with pronunciation and speaking with confidence. This is a common issue for language learners, and one I've personally experienced.
If I want to drive a car, I need to get in the driver's seat and hit the road, not RT(F)M. Same with languages. So I want to be able to talk anytime I want, know if I speak clearly enough to be understood, and ideally do so without spending a fortune.
🛠 Solution
I got really good results in Hungarian by just talking to a ton of people. It kickstarted my learning and I've since passed the advanced level in it and even take improv classes in Hungarian. I thought, why not try to turn this whole concept of "learning through speaking" into an app?
So I made a tool that lets you practice listening and speaking. You just talk to Gliglish about what you want and see if it understands you. Hopefully, by practicing without pressure, you can improve your pronunciation, gain confidence in your language abilities, and it'll then transfers into real world skills. (Think of it as a 🏯 dojo for languages.)
I made it for people who learn English with my products, but I thought why not add more languages to help me practice my own? ("Eat your own dog food!" like they say, I use Russian, Hungarian and English on a daily, Spanish occasionally), and a couple more. Gliglish actually made me want to pick up a new language!

🎯 Goal with this launch
My goal with this launch is to validate whether there is demand for a language learning tool like Gliglish, and to gather feedback from users to guide its future development.
Financially, I'd like to cover my expenses, because it's what makes it possible to keep working on it full time. I have to be honest and say the last year's been odd: I've been making products as an indie for 15 years, but last year I worked the most I ever have, yet had my worst year ever. So my hope with this launch is to make $8,000 in profit, as this would cover the last four months of work. But simply having it pay for my kid's birthday party this weekend and rent in two weeks would already mean a lot.
Spent 112 days on this, burned out twice, got sick and kept going. Now that the core product is out, I'd like to add cool features I dreamt of, only faster! ⚡️
I wanna make this a product people love! Ultimately, my aspiration in life is to create a tool that's highly valuable for language learners, because foreign languages are such a big part of my life. So I hope I can learn from this very first launch on Product Hunt and get one step closer!

To learn a language takes a tonne of courage.
For new learners every utterance can put their pride on the line.
They might pronounce the word incorrectly, or make a grammatical blunder etc.
With this app students get the chance to chat without suffering the consequences of the real world.
