I’m a data scientist by day and a DIYer by night (and most weekends). This project started when my wife and I finally accumulated enough vintage frames to fill the hallways and stairs in our home. I did what everyone does: laid them out on the floor, moved them around for hours, and then... realized I had no idea how to translate that mess to a vertical wall. "About 8 inches" wasn't good enough for the nails, and I had no clue which photos would actually look good in which frames. I looked for apps to help, but I hit two major walls: Stairs: Most apps only handle flat, rectangular walls. I had a staircase, wacky frame sizes, and multiple corners. Privacy: I’m a father and a data scientist. The idea of uploading photos of my kids to a random cloud server just to "preview" a layout didn't sit right with me. So, I built GalleryPlanner. I prototyped it to solve one of my own house project headaches, then pushed a beta to see if anyone else cared. The pivot from "My Tool" to "Product": The most fascinating part of this launch was watching the beta users. I used analytics and session replays to see where people were clicking (and where they were getting stuck). It turned into a game of "UI Whack-a-Mole"—refining the drag-and-drop, simplifying the math, and eventually building Smart Fill (AI photo matching) and Auto-Layout to handle the heavy lifting.
