Therapy was not designed with your unique East Asian, South Asian, and Pacific Islander cultural experiences in mind. At Flora, we connect you with an Asian or POC therapist that understands you.

Wow! Very interested in this. I've also had a similar experience, where it was hard to find someone who resonated with me. One of my biggest problems is I wish I could get my parents into therapy with me, as I have a lot of things I want to work through WITH them.
Have you guys considered going into family therapy for Asians?
I LOVE THIS IDEA and it's something that hits close to home for me too. So many interesting problems to tackle - cultural barriers, language barriers (especially for 1st gen immigrants), health-care coverage (from personal experience, it's been hard to find Asian therapists in-network), etc.
Is the main focus talk therapy or will this also expand to other services for mental health, e.g. psychiatry?
@leonzhan Glad to hear that you would find this useful but also unfortunate that you've had to deal with this issue yourself.
Our MVP is focused on talk therapy for now since we believe that's the largest opportunity but we definitely see an opportunity to expand to other mental health services!
Hey all! I'm Michael and I'm a second generation Chinese-American. A year ago, I finally found the courage to break the stigma around Asians talking about our "feelings" and try out therapy. At first, it was nice to talk to somebody. But then I realized my therapist, who happens to be white, didn't really understand my 2nd generation experience growing up Asian. It didn't seem like they deeply understood my identity issues, the pressures from my family, or the cultural "baggage" I have.
I switched therapists 2 times because I wanted to find someone who understood my experience. I started talking to my East Asian and South Asian friends and I realized that they too also had similar problems. That's when I realized that therapy was not designed for the Asian community! What really struck me was that 86 percent of psychologists in the U.S. workforce are white (https://www.apa.org/monitor/2018...). More and more people of color are looking for therapy but aren't finding people that have similar experiences as them. This was the main mission behind Flora Health: to make mental health more accessible to all, starting with the Asian community.

@david_ongchoco1 Thanks David! We believe that Asians are underserved today by mental health services, mainly due to historical stigmatization. After talking with many of our customers, we believe mental health in the Asian community is a growing trend that is here to stay. No one is yet stepping up to the plate to serve our community and we're hoping to change that!

Love this! It’s so important to feel connected to your therapist. Sadly, it’s hard to find a therapist who understands the Asian American experience and nuanced cultural norms. Congrats on this launch - excited to see how this helps people feel truly understood and seen! 🥰
@victorialimary Totally agree. We've learned it's the MOST important thing to feel connected to your therapist, otherwise you don't feel comfortable sharing, which leads to bad outcomes. Our belief is that connecting with someone of the same ethnicity and same shared experiences will lead to better mental health outcomes!

Congrats on the launch! Finding a therapist that someone can connect with is a very important aspect of therapy. The Asian/Indian communities have been underserved in this respect. Looking forward to seeing Flora solve this important problem!
@elakian Thanks! Totally agree that East Asian and Indian communities have been underserved. We really believe that mental health is going to continue to grow in the Asian/Indian communities but without services to meet their needs, there will be a gap in the market. We're hoping to close that gap and make access to mental health easy for all!

Excited to see where this goes. Happy with my current therapist (non-asian) but curious to explore if I could find an even better therapist relationship (and what that means)
