I kept needing to send someone a password or an API key, and every channel I had (WhatsApp, email, Slack) just keeps it. Forever. In two inboxes, in backups, on linked devices, in a screenshot someone forgot they took.
So I built Encoder. You write a message, it's encrypted in your browser, and you get a link. Whoever opens it reads it once ā the moment it's opened, the record is deleted from the server.
How it works, for the curious: the decryption key lives in the part of the URL after the "#", which browsers never send to a server. So my server only ever stores ciphertext it can't read.
Being upfront about the limits:
ā¢ It's closed-source for now (open-sourcing is on the roadmap)
ā¢ No third-party security audit yet ā it's a solo build
ā¢ It fixes the storage problem, not screenshots: nothing can stop someone photographing their screen
ā¢ The link itself is sensitive until it's opened
