Leonid is here — the creator and sole developer of Dictoterix service. To be honest, I started building it for myself so I could learn languages in a way that suited me best. Then, I decided that everyone can be invited as well.
The service’s standout feature is its dichotic bilingual learning engine. It generates phrases in two languages (your native language and the target language) on the fly, converts them to audio (TTS), and routes the sound to your headphones so that each language plays in a separate channel. The idea came to me one day based on my personal language learning experience, and after some research I found that there are some scientific evidences to its efficiency. This is how it started.
The system begins with individual words. Once a sufficient number of them have been mastered (or withing a few dives if you started above A1), it constructs complete sentences using vocabulary appropriate to the learning level. While primarily designed for use with headphones (to separate audio channels), the service also includes a simplified mode for standard speakers. Spanish and English are currently available.
I’ve also focused heavily on the pedagogical side: the sequence of introducing and reviewing vocabulary follows best practices, and a grammar module is integrated directly into the learning process.
A live practice mode is also available — a sort of social network for language learning (anonymous mode included). This feature is entirely optional and will likely become interesting once more people start using the service.
Obviously such service should exists as a mobile app, which is the next step after viability proof/check. The UI is mobile friendly though already.
