Why build this My son and I often play in chess tournaments, and after every tournament game I'd end up with a scoresheet with some typos and skipped moves. Most PGN tools either refuse to load anything invalid, or stop validating at the first bad move and leave the rest untouched. Worse, fixing a move gets treated as branching into a new variation instead of just replacing it, which is painful to untangle on a phone and ended up spending 1hour+ to fix it on my laptop. I built ChessNotate to fix the pain points. It doesn't just simply discard the moves after the first invalid moves and so you can still see the remaining moves and correcting a flagged move replaces it in place How did the approach evolve Initially the plan was to use OCR to capture handwritten notes with Apple VisionKit to avoid paying for a frontier model but it didn't work out. It only detected tables on a really good photo and it couldn't reliably parse fairly neat handwriting so I decided just to discard the OCR idea and focus on the core problem of making it easy to fix PGN instead To make typing PGN easier on phone, ChessNotate has its own notation keypad to make it easy to enter the moves
