USCG Captain's License prep usually costs $400–900. CaptainsGround is free: lessons + 500+ drill questions, each linked to the exact CFR / COLREGs rule it tests. Plus NMC-format mock exams, FSRS flashcards, and an adaptive study plan.
Hey there.
I built CaptainsGround after a friend showed me his $549 receipt for an OUPV video course.
The whole syllabus — 33 CFR, 46 CFR, the COLREGs, the Inland Rules — is public domain. The price tag never made sense to me.
So I turned the source text itself into the study tool. Drill questions get generated by Claude and then validated by a second model against the exact CFR chunk they cite. If the judge can't tie the answer back to the source, the question is dropped. Every chip on every drill links to the rule it tests, so you can verify it yourself.
What's in there: lessons, ~500 judge-validated drill questions, an NMC-format mock (70 × 90), FSRS flashcards, and a study plan built from your exam date. You still take the proctored final at a REC — we're not USCG-approved exam authority — but the prep is here.
If you've taken the OUPV or Master in the last year or two — does the mock feel like the real thing? That's the gut-check I can't do myself.
