Looking for work? We create profiles of teams that are hiring. We get on video calls with team members and ask them hard questions about their work culture and what they're building. Unlike Glassdoor, we give you information you actually want—before you apply.
What’s up Product Hunt community!
I’m Jackson, one of the cofounders of Before You Apply. I’m also a long-time PH lurker, so this is quite a moment for me :)
Before You Apply is the tool my team members and I wish existed the last time we looked for work. If you’ve been on your own job hunt recently, you know it too: Everything sucks. Job boards suck. Job descriptions suck. The application process sucks. Companies keep their cards close and rarely tell you what you’re getting into.
Before You Apply is the beginning of our effort to tear it all down—and rebuild from a single, simple principle: give job seekers what they want.
We started by conducting UX interviews with dozens of senior engineers and sales people in the startup world. This led to a handful of core product decisions:
- Start with the team that’s hiring, not the job. Turns out *nobody* likes job descriptions.
- Obsessively focus on earning and keeping trust. No marketing fluff.
- Embrace content—and make it good—even if it doesn’t scale well (for now).
Ultimately, we want to create a job search experience that’s so fun and enjoyable that everyone, from active job seekers to people who already have work, comes to Before You Apply to explore opportunities.
...But like, there’s just one problem: we don’t have very many teams on the site right now ;) We’re launching today with our first eight teams, and we’ll release 25 more teams in the coming weeks. And a faster pace still into 2021. (Ok ok, so maybe we're not "100X better" quite yet—but we're racing to scale and get there!)
Is your team hiring? Reach out to my cofounder, Nate: nate@beforeyouapply.com.
I’m also (duh) stoked to answer Q’s here!
Finally, a huge shout-out to our launch teams! Thank you so much for taking a risk on us. Kudos to our peeps at TaxJar, Wave, Human API, Assurance IQ, Boulevard, Yello, and Animalz!
Congrats on the launch! How are you planning on acquiring visitors / job seekers? Are you relying on the brands/teams to promote the profile and videos?
@alancassinelli Hey Alan. Thanks for the legit question. Short answer: we rely heavily on the brands/teams for distribution—but recognize this is risky so we don't leave anything to chance. Behind the scenes, for every profile we actually spend 4–6 hours coaching recruiters on how to get the profile in front of the right candidates at the right time.
This coaching takes place across two structured workshops, where we get in the weeds and lead the in-house recruiting team (and sometimes Marketing and PR/Comms teams) through 8 best practices. We've done the process many times over and everything is optimized and mapped down to the 10-minute interval.
On the surface, I guess nobody would know about this. We should perhaps talk about it more. In the short term, it's arguably our primary differentiator compared to the handful of other products we compete with for budget (mostly Glassdoor, The Muse, and BuiltIn).
To take this a step further, if you're familiar with Twitch's early growth strategy, we're basically doing that: we're building f'ing awesome tools for the creators on the platform. For Twitch this was streamers; for us it's recruiters. In our case, we're aiming to make team profiles SO good for candidates that recruiters won't want to use any other tool for candidate communication. Tactically, this means our team profiles need to convert candidates into applicants better than any other asset, including the company's own careers page. We're obviously early, but this is already happening for at least two of our eight launch teams. We're quite bullish :)
Aight. Marathon answer. Thanks for the great question!
Wow! This looks amazing. It solves the very real problem of knowing what it’s actually like to work at a company before going there plus... for small companies or teams with “uncool” products, it creates an opportunity to showcase how amazing they really are, making it easier to hire great talent. Can’t wait to try this out!
@upstartgirl You're the best, Jen! And yes—this has been super successful for our "uncool" customers. Who, of course, are often very cool on the inside. Now the world will know :D

I like how Before You Apply humanizes the process of applying for a job. Too often it can feel like throwing your CV into the void.
@akajoshlevine Oh boy, The Void(TM). That's honestly a hard nut to crack. If we're able to reach significant scale, I can see backing into a solution. But man, I feel ya...and it's hard. Much thanks for your early support :)
This looks incredible. The Job Portraits team is always changing the game and I learned a lot from them in the employer branding space. Looking forward to learning more.
@therealkofi Thanks, Kofi! Much, much appreciated.

We've loved working with @jacksonsolway and the Before You Apply team. We launched one Eng profile and we're already working on a second profile for our Sales team. It solves a very specific problem for our Employer Brand team without having to rely on our internal marketing team.
What a cool resource - and I love that you didn't shy away from asking the hard questions of folks. This is the kind of info I always wish I had as a candidate. Congrats on the launch!
@arielleshipper Thanks, Arielle! Three cheers to hard questions. Unsurprisingly, our early engagement data shows that candidates are way more likely to click on provocative questions than the standard stuff. For some customers it's been a leap of faith to publish certain answers, but, as far as I know, nobody has regretted it. Much thanks for your support!
