BananaBin

Lets you know when to empty the MacOS Bin

Is MacOS always telling that your bin is full when installing a new app? Use BananaBin and it'll be obvious when it's time to take out the trash. When there are flies flying, it's time to take out the trash.

It's so simple yet adds so much life to your mac. The subtle flies flying around really do make it more active to trash or monitor what's in your bin. We need more fun things like this in our computing.

@gabe Congratulations on the launch of BananaBin! It's a simple yet effective way to manage disk space and maintain performance.

6 and a half years ago I wanted to build this app, but I couldn't figure out how to read out the MacOS bin position on the screen. I recently talked about it over beers with my friend Leon who's been building MacOS apps over the past couple years. He gave it a go and he got it to work. πŸ’ͺ During the weeks after we built BananaBin together, in public. To make sure it worked we attempted a very quiet soft-launch on Twitter and Threads. We teased a picture of the bin with flies, which instantly exploded in our faces and resulted in a lot of attention. By the end of the week BananaBin was featured on The Verge, Mac Magazine, and even MKBHD tweeted about it. 🀯 We hope you enjoy the fun BananaBin brings to your mac, and of course we'd love your support, use code PHLAUNCH for a 30% discount this weekend. πŸŽ‰

@petethewiz Thanks Pete! Yea it might be a bit much then, but they do only appear when it's time to clean the bin, they're not always there 😊

@kostyabolsh So funny to hear! I doubted we could get it this good, but Rive really helped make that possible.

@rikschennink That's a fun origin story for BananaBin! It sounds like a lighthearted and useful app to remind Mac users to empty their trash bins. Here's a concise response combining feedback and offering help: - The fly-based bin fullness indicator is a creative touch! Are there any plans for additional visual themes or customization options? - Would BananaBin consider integrating with notification systems for a more proactive approach to reminding users about their bin levels? As a developer, I'm interested in the technical aspects behind monitoring the Mac bin status and the visual design of the bin indicator. If those align with my expertise (Mac development, UI/UX design), I might be able to contribute to future features. Overall, BananaBin seems like a fun and functional addition to the Mac user experience. The discount code is a great incentive to try it out! I'd love to see more customization options and potentially explore notification integrations in the future.

There was a time when Apple themselves used to bake in fun touches like this. Little details like this are the sort of things people remember. Love to see it!

@johnonolan πŸ™ Let's hope they're inspired :)

@semanser Thanks! Smiles is what we're going for! :)

Congrats on the launch! I love this idea. I'd be curious to know how you chose the price point. Did you do any price discovery processes? I think a lot of people don't see value in digital items despite spending more money on frivolous physical items.
Leon Schrijvers
@jack_michalak Hi Jack, great question! For some time we thought about releasing BananaBin for free for everyone. However, creating it was a bit more complicated than anticipated, so we figured we wanted some kind of reward for that. We choose to stick to a low price point to keep it fun for everyone! 😊
