Underlay checks in on what and how you're doing, then engineers the mix for that exact task and state. No playlists, no decisions, just texture your brain can settle into.

Hi PH Community,
I'm James and I built underlay.fm because while I love the idea of focus music and audio apps that get me into flow, it didn't seem to be quite working for me. I'd be too conscious of the music, humming or bopping along, and not as immersed in the work as I wanted to be.
So underlay.fm doesn't play music. It layers pre-produced ambient texture and mixes it live in your browser: a drone bed, mid textures, air, sub grounding, phase elements. Before each session it asks two things: what are you doing, and how are you feeling. Work mode shapes the structure. "Reading" strips the texture down to just a few layers so nothing competes with the page, "Creative" opens it up fuller. Mood then tunes the frequency and density within that. "Scattered" gets a different environment than "Tired." "Anxious" gets calmer frequencies and lower density than "Activated."
This is a web app (PWA, works offline after first load), headphones help overall and matter for the binaural side specifically, and it's built for focus, not sleep or relaxation. The demo video above is a silent screen capture. For the actual sound, hit the sample on the homepage or just start a session.
You can try it right now without creating an account. Your first session has everything unlocked, and free accounts get a session every day after that. I'd genuinely love to hear what the texture feels like for you, especially if you have ADHD symptoms, since that's where the "nothing to latch onto" design is intended to help most.
