Hey Timon, is there a possibility to add vegan products to the database? Or does it simply read and identify the ingredients and make a verdict itself?

Hey Nika!
Not right now, but that’s one of the first features I’m planning to add.
The app uses the Open Food Facts database (an open community maintained database). I want to maken that when a product isn’t recognized by the scanner, you can submit the vegan status yourself, which then gets forwarded to their database.
That way, it helps the whole food community, not just my app.😁

@onerack Cool! I think that this way is more useful because it will reflects at the same time in many places :D
I love the concept. Does it work offline or in stores where the reception is spotty?
OneRack
@ashir_riaz Unfortunately not, the app needs an internet connection to fetch product data from the Open Food Facts database. That means it won’t work offline or in areas with poor reception. Maybe I can stroe the most common products locally, but I will first see if there is demand for that.
Some ingredients have different labels depending on the region or brand how do you deal with those inconsistencies, especially for imported items?

@sebastian_leo Great question! It relies on the Open Food Facts database, which includes region-specific product entries when available. However, ingredient labeling can still vary by brand or country.
To handle this, we also offer AI-powered ingredient analysis, so even if a product isn’t labeled consistently, you can take a photo of the ingredient list and get a vegan check based on what’s actually written.
Amazing tool. Does the scanner also pick up on cruelty free or animal testing info or is it all about the ingredients?

@emma_campbell3 Thanks! Right now it's all abotu ingredients, but I'm plannign to see more options in the future!
Just out of curiosity, what’s the strangest non vegan ingredient the AI has caught so far? It’s always a mix of fun and shock to discover what’s lurking in processed foods.
I love the instant scan idea but how does it deal with E-numbers and additives that aren’t always clearly labeled? Are those linked to vegan status in your database or marked for caution?
