Machine learning digital gym + personal training built in

3.4/5
About

Tonal is the first-ever adaptive digital strength training system, powered by digital weights, with interactive workouts built in. It’s like having a personal trainer and a full gym, in the convenience of your home. One system, the size of a flat-screen TV, replaces every piece of equipment in a weight room.

Unfortunately, the warranty for your customers is pretty bad and completely one-sided. Really wanted to buy this until reading it.
@shawn_grant You are obviously a shill for other company as this is a complete lie. I own it, with a 3 year warranty. If the warranty was so bad, why didn't you post the one sided part?
Just a techie
@dovid_kaleky No, genuinely thought this was perfect for what I was looking for until I read that the warranty doesn't even cover you on wear and tear, the installation, and only covers parts & labor first year, then you're on your own with just warranties for parts. Found it here - https://www.tonal.com/warranty/
ceo, sincerely

I can't believe it took until the year 2018 for the world to get a smart weight lifting machine - but i'm glad it has arrived! It is amazing to see how much thought and effort went into this product from the team. Great work!

Pros:

packs small against the wall like a TV. Great workout in the home

Cons:

none

Traveler

For someone that benches 450lbs, dead lifts 600+lbs. etc...I'd literally pull down any modern house wall that is not structurally re-enforced with quality steel girders. This would be great for the classic programmer soy boy.

Pros:

Tries to simplify workouts

Cons:

For advance users, they'll need a strong wall support

Our lag bolts have 16Klbs of pull out force. It's not coming off the wall.

@natebosshard Thank god! I'm totally safe.

All I can imagine is the thing flying off the wall when I pull hard on it. What is the full range of weight it can simulate? From the limited information I can gather from the Tonal site (can't find any external/independent reviews) 23lb or even 120lb is on the low end, and I am not an ego lifter.

Also how many "white gloved" installs do you get? if i'm renting and moving around alot will I also have to invest in a power drill?

Definitely going to keep my eye on this, because if it actually does what it says, it could be a game changer. However considering the price tag I need more information and objective reviews from trusted sources before I can commit.

Pros:

interesting idea

Cons:

mounting concerns, scarce information and details

"lag bolts have 16Klbs of pull out force. It's not coming off the wall." and the unit can do 200lbs of weight.
Share
The unit can provide 200lbs of resistance, but remember- there is no gravity or inertia involved.. so it has a bit of a "windchill" effect. In some positions, 10lbs feels like 15 and 200lbs feels like 225 as compared with dumbbells that are self-stabilizing against gravity. In a nutshell - you have to do more work with Tonal to lift the same weight. More muscle engagement = you become stronger.

@liz_letchford So when I reference a weight, I will probably say "Tonal Weight" after I say the number. Like, 25 lb Tonal Weight or 25 lb TW. Which would really mean either 20 or 30 lbs. That's all it takes. Just remember the obvious: these are not free weights!!

this thing is so cool, and it's not just the technology; it's incredible to have access to a whole team of coaches, workouts, and programs right at your fingertips

Pros:

Sleek, convenient, and really a coach for every body

Cons:

none

great workout. super simple to use. just turn it on and it tells you what exercises to do and how much to lift.

Pros:

super convenient - workout in your underwear!

Cons:

can't have it right this second - gotta be delivered :-/

@tonal I just ordered mine yesterday and it states it won't be here for at least THREE MONTHS! :( Dang, that sux. And I imagine it's because they have probably had a surge of sales since this whole COVID thing kicked off. Just my luck. Oh well, I know it will be well worth the weight. Can't "weight". Lol
@tonal @robblog, I imagine its more like no one is buying one due to the high price, so they need to build it one by one as the order comes in. That's why you need to wait so long for it. $5000 is nuts

In one fell swoop, this machine has made every other strength-training workout feel decades outdated.

Pros:

Smart video content tailored to each workout, gorgeous design, proud to have in a living room, huge display makes the tainer feel real

@beneinstein Hey Ben, you forgot to disclose you're an investor in this company! No cons except that they have employees and investors reviewing shit and pretending like they are honest. Huge red flag for anyone thinking about working with you or Bolt or @axelbichara

From all the at home workouts, this is by far the most incredibl. Goodbye bow flex and thigh master and ridiculous 1001 other gimmicks.

Pros:

eliminates barriers from being able to workout. There’s no more excuses if you can have a full gym at your home.

Cons:

None.

Working on GAINS
I have not used this product yet but i doubt there are any CONS. I can come up with a few just from the videos... 1. How secure is it? These days everything is hacked...so what information is being shared with this? 2. This is like the "Chuck Norris machine" but that machine allows you to do pullups, neither has the ability for dips. 3. Replacement cost and warranty? 4. How strong will the walls have to be? 5. What if i move, can this be easily be taken down and relocated?

Love new tech. A geek. Crazy cat lady.
@optimistic_realist Most of what you mentioned isn’t necessarily a con, but things you may want answers for. You may have cons after using it, but you can’t push someone to list cons if they don’t see them. Sheesh.

I like working in studios and the gym around people but with an option an home, I can still work out with Convenience

Pros:

Skip: Rain, horrible traffic, subway not running, class not available, it’a late, ...etc.

now I have working out at home option when I need

Cons:

Nothing so far. will see how it goes over the long term

Share

This is the very definition of investing in yourself. Can't wait to try it out!

Pros:

Elegant, beautiful and practical. This product is ideal for people who love to work out but don't necessarily want to go to the gym.

Cons:

May be a tad bit expensive but I would have no problem paying for something like this.

@rezaur_rahman @moiz_ali2 Wow Moiz! I would say he could make this fair statement without trying it out. And how does that make this guy a "fucking asshole"? Seriously, if you don't like a comment, do what yo mamma told you to do: if you can't say anything nice, keep your mouth shut!
Share
@rezaur_rahman @moiz_ali2 @robblog Maybe his a little out of line, but I feel the same way. Dude is commenting on shit his never tried just to make the ratings better. That makes him an asshole for trying to trick us, or do you think diffrent? What do you think about people that try to manipulate you?

@rezaur_rahman @moiz_ali2 @robblog @london_m I mean, if you feel that’s manipulative, that’s on you. I can read, so I took it for what it is (like any review), his OPINION.

I have used the Tonal machine. It is the real deal. No more banging weights. The motors provide a better work out. Excited to be connected to trainers to help me with workouts.

Pros:

Strength room on your wall, connected to trainers, making it easier to get workouts in

Cons:

cant think of any

Tod, are the arms adjustable to swing out to the sides? also, are they stable (in the videos they appear to wobble)? thanks!

IF YOU LIVE IN A CONDO OR APARTMENT PLEASE READ BEFORE PURCHASING TONAL, OR IF THE UNIT WILL BE INSTALLED ON A WALL THAT BACKS A BEDROOM IN YOUR HOUSE. There are a lot of questions about installing Tonal in the Group. TONAL as a company is being dishonest at future buyers expense. Tonal does not disclose that this unit can possibly make noise on opposite walls, or units above, below or even across from you.. My next door neighbors experienced a saw sound in their unit.. I asked TONAL before I purchased if I can use the unit and not disturb my Roommate.. they said yes.. put the Bluetooth headphones on.. They Neglect to tell me that the unit itself sounds like a chain saw in my roommates room.. I was working with support and they acted as if this Never happened.. The installers told me 1 out of 10 installs is returned because of sound problems.. I spent 2k trying to sound proof the wall, have the wall repaired and installing a power outlet under the unit.. Nothing stoped the sound travel.. 2 walls in my home where damaged and TONAL has not done anything in good faith to resolve.. Their site survey does not mention sound problems.. They only care to sell units.. If something goes wrong they don’t care about there customer.. This is not on their web site anywhere.. AGAIN, purchase this machine at your own risk if you have shared walls or putting machine on a wall where someone might be sleeping.. As long as you’re OK with having them take it back if sound problem happens.. if you’re ok with your wall having multiple bolts inside and TONAL not exposing this to you and you having to fix the wall after their machine fails to install correctly.. For the installers they get paid less $ on FAILED installs.. so even the people working hard for the company ends up working for less money because they don't properly sell the machine..

Pros:

great machine

Cons:

DOES NOT WORK IN MY CANDO

Tonal Customer
I just purchased and I agree with Tonal making quite a bit of noise for the apartment above me. Unfortunately I received a defective product with one of the cable pulley's non-functional. Tonal has contacted me and is offering a replacement soon, I worry about the damage that it may cause. You stated that 2 of your walls were damaged, can you elaborate more? Are the walls repairable? how big are the holes that remain? Reading your review has me doubting installation of another unit, especially when their warranty states that it does not cover: "Damage caused by improper installation, relocation, or uninstallation." "Damage to your property, home, walls, or floors that may result from installation or removal of the Product." I hope a Tonal representative can clarify this

@mathew_perelman I can't say anything for the wall damage issues that you experienced, but I saw this on their website and it specifically addresses noise issues: https://knowledge.tonal.com/s/ar... (copy and paste into your browser's URL line) Since this review was at least a year ago ( I know, I'm pretty late to the party), I don't know if it was stated like this before you bought yours or not. Of course the company wants to make money, that's what any business hopes to make! As for the installers, that's their business. They know what happens to them when installs don't go as planned. I wouldn't feel to sorry for them, it's their chosen livelihood. How structurally sound were your walls? How do you know it wasn't because of that? But I don't know how you could expect a company to address the noise issues such as you had. It's impossible to know what each and every situation exists for particular buyers. Your advise could be useful to other condo owners though. Bottom line, I don't know what or why you expect the company to be responsible for all of the ELECTIVE work you had done on your own personally procured and paid for property. They didn't tell you to tear down your wall and do all of the things you did, including sound proofing?? I would say lessons learned. I know I've had to eat my share. Bitter taste with no immediately sweet reward. I'm sorry for what you went through sir. I believe Tonal is a step in the right direction for the rest of us.

@mathew_perelman @robblog I really want to get a Tonal. I'm also in a condo and wonder how much noise it would make for my upstairs neighbor. Tonal says noise is similar to a dishwasher. That means nothing. My old dishwasher was quite loud and my new one makes hardly any noise at all. My other concern is whether this company will be a success. I don't want to spend $4000 on a product that is no longer supported when company fails.
Share

@mathew_perelman @robblog I'm also skeptical because the vast majority of reviews I've found are 2 years old.
@mathew_perelman @robblog @okjl Tonal makes more noise than a dishwasher. The description of a saw is very accurate. You can definitely hear it in the room next to Tonal but we can hear it in other rooms down the hall.

This is our third tonal and now the new feature of building our own workout crashes in the middle of the workout. The product shouldn’t hit the market being this buggy.

Reader, thinker, lifelong learner.
Buyer beware: inept customer service! While individual customer service reps with Tonal were always helpful and sympathetic, there was very little follow-through, and poor communication (I had to initiate most interactions). Here's the story: After the rather late delivery of the product (more than 13 weeks from the time I ordered, with zero communication from Tonal about the fact that it would be delayed) the installers discovered I'd gotten a defective unit: the arms would not rotate. They said this was rare, but they'd seen it before. Called it in, and I was soon contacted by Tonal with a request to send a video of the problem. I won't bore you with the details of what followed. Suffice to say that after 5 weeks of unsuccessful attempts to rectify the issue (wrong replacement parts shipped, service calls scheduled when a replacement unit was required, some drama about extending my 30-day trial period since I never got a chance to even try the Tonal, and a consistent lack of initiative on Tonal's part to make things right--I always had to initiate contact), I finally gave up and requested a return/refund earlier today. Would have loved to have a Tonal and don't doubt that they're wonderful products if you get a non-defective unit! As a veteran with a bad back, I was looking forward to a fitness solution that didn't involve lifting heavy free weights over my head! But all I've got to show for the past 4.5 months is a lot of waiting, phone calls with sympathetic but ultimately ineffective service reps, and a wall that will need to be patched and repainted.
