OpenCharm is an open-source body for the AI agent you already run, right by your Mac's notch. Hold one key to talk and Claude Code, Codex or any agent gets to work, answers out loud and asks when it needs you. Next, it hangs from your keychain.

The face changing when the agent actually needs permission is a neat idea. I'd appreciate knowing it needs me without keeping the terminal in view. Congrats on the launch, Michael!
@oleksii_sekundant thank you! i'm using it as a general local assistant hooked up with Claude Code and speaking and interacting with me with voice while doing other things. Try it, it's fun!
my hesitation with giving the agent a face is that the face's state and the agent's actual state are two different systems that can drift apart. if the eyes show "working" based on something like a heartbeat or process-alive check, that's a different claim than "the agent is making progress on your task." a hung tool call or a silent retry loop can look identical to real progress from the outside. does the thinking/working/needs-you state come from the agent's own self-reported status, or from something that can independently tell the difference between busy and stuck
@galdayan yep agree with that, a face that lies is worse than no face at all. OpenCharm doesn't run on a heartbeat but follows the real events between you and the agent and when it asks for you it's the agent's actual permission request. for sure rn, the weak spot is a hung tool call which still looks like thinking until a timer ends it so a real stuck face is next. How would you tell stuck from slow?
@mfbz honestly I don't think you can tell from the outside alone, not reliably. slow still shows forward motion if you sample it twice a few seconds apart, stuck doesn't move between those two checks. so maybe it's less about a timer threshold and more about comparing two readings - progress since last check, not elapsed time. still won't catch a loop that's technically moving but never finishing, but that's a different failure mode than hung
@galdayan yes or maybe an idea could be to observe file changing or stuff like that, but i thought about OpenCharm to be as most agent agnostic possible so you can use it with any ai agent
