butbetter is a tiny Mac app that rewrites selected text directly where you type Select text, press one shortcut, and it replaces the text in place - no copy/paste loops, no switching tabs, no side panels. Your words, but better. It lives quietly in the menu bar with minimal settings, designed to stay out of the way. No accounts, no API keys, no model choices, no “BYOK” setup, it just works out of the box. Works in any app: Slack, email, docs, browsers. Built for speed and minimal friction.

I originally built butbetter for myself months ago. I noticed I was copying and pasting text into ChatGPT constantly just to sound better in English (not my native language), fix grammar, or make my email messages more formal.
Most existing tools felt too heavy for that. Pop-ups, side panels, suggestions, modes. I didn’t want a new interface - I just wanted my usual Cmd+C / Cmd+V flow, but better. So I built a tiny Mac app: select text, press one shortcut, get a better version in place. I’ve been quietly using it every day since.
At some point my wife noticed a strange shortcut I kept pressing (Cmd + Option + Control + B, picked almost by accident) and asked what it was. When she said “I want that too,” it clicked: maybe this isn’t just a me problem.
There are people struggling with English as their second language who don’t want to be misunderstood, or those who want to sound professional without coming off as arrogant in emails. Some just find it hard to avoid typos. They don’t need complex AI solutions or heavy grammar-checking apps, they just want to type but better.
That’s why I decided to ship it with minimal settings needed, no accounts or registrations. It's a product I’ve been using daily, and I’m excited to refine it as we go, together.
