Wanted to like it but just can't accept a application that always keeps the mic open and listening even when not in use. Support told me this is a "feature" to make sure the mic works but still unacceptable.

Pros:

Good UI, Easy to Use

Cons:

Hot Mic! When using the desktop app it is constantly listening to your mic anytime the app is open, even if not on a call.

Hey Bryan, I'd love to help you get to the bottom of this. Your microphone will continue to be on so long as the app is open, but no audio will be recorded unless you're actively on a call. We always have security top-of-mind! Let me know if this helps.
Hi @bryanbittner, Hi @sp_bauer I'm Johann, software engineer at Aircall and I come to bring you more details about the microphone volume checker widget. In a few words: We actually don't listen to your mic when you're not in call, we're just asking to your browser/system for the volume level. I think this is all about UX because it's right that you shouldn't think the app's listening to the mic every time. By having a look on the widget, I can totally understand why you have this feeling and I maybe could have felt the same if I didn't know how it works. Let me go on with some more details: First, and very important thing, as an answer to Stephen's "You shouldn't have to keep the mic on until the conversation happens.": we don't have enough permission to turn your mic on or off. Your operating system can do that, apps like Aircall technically can't. This is due to the way browser and mobile authorizations works. In facts, we're constantly asking to the browser/system: hey, please give me a list of measured volume levels from which I can compute the volume average level. As they're cool guys, they actually gives us this info which allows us to determines up to which point we fill the widget with the blue background. In conclusion: we don't manipulate any voice or audio data coming from your mic but just data (numbers to be precise) that your browser & system gives us about the audio volume coming from your mic. There's no privacy issue at our level in the way this widget works, so, I don't think we'll change the way we measure sound intensity. However, as we're concerned about the fact some people may misunderstand the way it works, I think we'll have some internal discussions about how to make the UX more clear. If you have any questions about this or any other subject, please let me know by answering to this comment or contact us at privacy [at] aircall.io. Kind regards, Johann.
