I built ZuckOff because I was tired of opening Instagram to reply to a message or check a friends post and somehow ending up scrolling Reels for 30 minutes.
I didn't want to delete Instagram and I did not want to wrestle with another screen time solution. I just wanted to slim it down to the features I actually use. Turn Instagram into something I can actually get bored of. Not just an endless time pit.
I went looking for a solution and found a few apps doing something similar, but most were charging subscriptions. That didn't feel right.
So I decided to build my own free alternative!
ZuckOff is a iOS Safari extension that strips out Reels, Explore and suggested posts while keeping DMs, Stories and your Following feed. Basically, Instagram before everything became algorithmic.
I settled on a completely optional rewarded ad as a way to cover the costs of putting the app on the App Store. Even that is something I plan to get rid of as soon as I've made back what I spent getting it published.
I'm not trying to build a subscription business out of people's screen-time problems. I just wanted a simpler Instagram, and figured other people might too.
