1. What exactly is Yukkai?

Yukkai is a native AI workspace for Mac. It lets you create persistent AI specialists with their own roles, goals, instructions, tools, skills, memory, workflows and working directories.

They can work independently, collaborate as a team or delegate parallel work to a swarm of temporary agents.

2. How is Yukkai different from Claude Code, Codex or OpenClaw?

Claude Code and Codex are primarily designed around a coding assistant. Yukkai can also develop software, use the terminal and work with Git, but its scope extends to research, documents, communication, design, media, Mac automation and control others device like Windows PC.

OpenClaw inspired the original idea, but I wanted something easier to install, more reliable and designed around security and privacy from the beginning.

Yukkai is not one assistant. It is the environment where an entire AI team can work.

3. Is Yukkai really free?

The Yukkai Mac application is free, with no mandatory subscription.

You can use the free models available through Yukkai, connect your own OpenRouter key (BYOK) or purchase credits through the Yukkai wallet and pay only for the models you consume.

Model providers, image generation, video generation and large swarms may have usage costs, but you remain in control of how much you spend.

4. Is Yukkai local, or is it another SaaS platform?

Yukkai is local-first. Your agents, memories, workspaces, settings and files live on your Mac rather than inside a Yukkai cloud workspace.

However, local-first does not mean that every operation is offline. If you choose a hosted AI model or connect a remote service, the information required for that request is sent to the selected provider.

You decide which models, tools and external services Yukkai can use.

5. Which AI models can I use?

Yukkai provides access to more than 300 text models, as well as image, audio and video models.

You can use Yukkai-managed access, connect your own OpenRouter key or download compatible local models through Apple MLX.

Local MLX currently focuses on text conversations and does not provide every tool, vision or media capability available through hosted models (coming soon with Apple Intelligence).

6. What is the difference between an AI Team and a swarm?

Your AI Team contains persistent specialists that you configure and keep over time. Each team member can have a profession, personality, memory, LLM, tools, skills, rules, workflows and a dedicated workspace. They can work 24/7.

A swarm is created for a specific mission. Yukkai divides that mission into parallel tasks and can launch up to 100 specialized workers before consolidating their results.

The actual concurrency, speed and cost depend on the selected models, provider limits and available budget.

7. Is Yukkai only for developers?

No. Developers are a natural early audience because Yukkai can work with source code, terminals and Git, but it was designed for anyone already doing the work of an entire team.

Founders, researchers, consultants, designers, marketers and content creators can build their own AI specialists without writing code.

Some advanced integrations and automations may still require technical configuration.

8. Can Yukkai work with my files, applications and online services?

Yes. Yukkai can work inside selected folders, create and edit files, execute local tools, browse the web and use connected services.

It also supports MCP integrations. Depending on the service, a connection may require OAuth authorization, an API key, local dependencies or additional configuration. Installing a plugin does not automatically give it access to your accounts.

9. How does Yukkai protect my computer and data?

Security and privacy were architectural priorities from the beginning.

Yukkai includes granular tool permissions, approval controls, protected filesystem paths, an encrypted secrets Vault, prompt-injection detection and audit logs.

No agent platform can honestly guarantee zero risk. Agents capable of taking real actions must be configured carefully, especially when using automated workflows or swarms. Yukkai is designed to make those capabilities visible and controllable.

10. Is Yukkai ready for production use?

Yukkai is currently in public beta. The core application is functional and already used for real work, but you should still expect bugs, incomplete integrations and workflows that need improvement.

That is why we are launching on Product Hunt now. We are looking for early users who will test Yukkai seriously, challenge our decisions and help us build a credible private, native alternative to Claude Code and Codex.
