What if your computer could help keep a free messaging network alive?
Hey Product Hunt! π
Witchat π§ is a free, MIT-licensed, open-source BitChat-compatible messenger for Windows and Linux, built in Rust.
The idea is simple: communication shouldn't require an account, a phone number, or permission from a centralized platform.
But here's the part I find most interesting: Witchat isn't just a desktop chat client. It can also operate as a headless Bluetooth mesh relay, allowing computers to participate in forwarding messages between nearby devices.
Combined with encrypted messaging, Bluetooth Low Energy networking, and optional Nostr internet relays, it's an demonstration in making decentralized communication more accessible * resilient.
It's an early release, and there's plenty of interoperability testing and refinement ahead.
I'd love to hear your thoughts:
If you could use your computer as part of a decentralized communications network, what would interest you most?
Private, account-free messaging
Off-grid communication when internet access is unavailable
Community-powered mesh networks
Building your own applications on open communication protocols
Witchat is free, open-source, and available to explore today.
