Would you want a cloud option for Tipword?
by•
Right now, to use languages like Greek, Hebrew or Swedish in Tipword, you have to set up your own Google Translate API key. Most people hate that step.
I’m thinking of running it on my side instead. You’d just turn it on and it works, no key and no Google account. It’d cost a little extra since I pay Google for it. On-device translation stays free like now.
Would you use it? Just reply 👍 or 👎, and if you’d use it, tell me which language.

Could the cloud option be enabled per language with a clear usage limit?
I would want to see when text leaves the Mac and have translation stop at the limit rather than silently add charges
👍, but I'd think about the "a little extra" part before picking how to charge for it
A hover translator gets called on the same few hundred words over and over. If you cache on your side per word and language pair, most hovers after the first week never reach Google, and your real cost ends up far below the raw call count. In a flashcard tool I build, audio works this way: a word gets voiced once and every repeat comes from the cache, and the daily cap only counts the cache misses.
That's why I'd go with prepaid usage over a flat monthly add-on. The cost scales with new words, not with how much someone reads, so a flat fee overcharges light users and loses money on someone translating a whole Greek novel
