I built Sundial - Time hunter because I kept beating my own limits.

Setting an iOS Screen Time limit took me ten seconds. Ignoring it took one: the prompt offers Ignore Limit, and I tapped it every single time. The feature was working exactly as designed — it was asking me to out-argue myself at the exact moment I had the least capacity to do that.

So the first thing I changed was the escape route. In Sundial, the shield doesn't offer "ignore". It offers I'm done and not done yet, and the second one opens real choices: fifteen more minutes, or lift this rule until midnight. You can still get through it — you just have to say what you're doing, in words, instead of flicking a dialog away.

The second thing I changed was the voice. Every shield repeats the reason you wrote when you made the rule — "For my health. Put the phone down." You are being argued with by the version of yourself who had a clear head, which turns out to be a much better opponent than a red exclamation mark.

Three things worth a look if you only have a minute:

  1. The shield is the whole product in one screen — the first image above.

  2. One rule can hold a group. Six rules is the cap; each one can cover as many apps or whole categories as you like, so the app asks you to think about your day, not to maintain a list.

  3. Nothing leaves the phone. No account, no server, no analytics, no ads. All of it is computed locally with Apple's Screen Time framework, which hands over summed usage — never what you do inside an app.
