Proxy failing at 2 AM? Here's our debug checklist

Every team that runs data pipelines has had that moment: you wake up to a flooded Slack channel, 403s and CAPTCHAs everywhere, and no idea where to start. After too many of those nights, we built a debug checklist. Here's what we run through every time.

1. Check authentication first

Before you blame the proxy network, confirm your credentials are still valid. Did your password expire? Did your IP whitelist change? Proxy auth failures are surprisingly common and take 30 seconds to rule out.

2. Verify the proxy is actually online

Not all proxies are created equal — and not all of them are online at any given moment. Some providers oversubscribe their IPs, routing too many users through the same addresses and creating traffic patterns no real household would produce. If you're seeing intermittent failures, this is often the culprit.

3. Check your rotation strategy

Are you rotating per request on a session-based task? Aggressive rotation on workflows that require session persistence looks suspicious to anti-bot systems. Real users don't switch IPs mid-session. Match your rotation strategy to your use case before assuming the proxy is broken.

4. Test with a different endpoint

If your proxy works on a test endpoint but fails on your target, the issue isn't the proxy — it's the target's anti-bot protections. Try a different geographic region, adjust your request cadence, or switch from datacenter to residential IPs.

5. Look at your logs (really look at them)

Most teams log errors but never analyse the patterns. Are failures clustered around specific times? Specific regions? Specific endpoints? Pattern recognition will save you hours of blind debugging.
