Built an iOS app that turns daily steps into a real-world journey across the map (Walk the World)

by

Hey everyone 👋

I recently built and launched an iOS app called Walk the World.

It started as a personal idea from my own routine — I was using an under-desk treadmill while working and realized I was walking way more than I expected. That made me curious about something simple:

“What if my daily steps actually took me somewhere real on a map?”

So I built an app around that idea.

🌍 What it does

Walk the World turns your steps into a journey across the real world:

  • Pick any destination on Earth (Tokyo, New York, etc.)

  • Your daily steps move you along a real route on a map

  • You unlock countries and “passport stamps” as you progress

  • You can visually track your journey over time

  • Optional challenges let you race friends to destinations

🚶 Why I built it

Most step trackers stop at numbers and streaks.

I wanted something that feels more like progress through a world, not just fitness data.

📱 Status

The app is now live on iOS and I’m actively improving it based on early user feedback.

🙏 Feedback

I’d love feedback from other indie builders on:

  • Does the concept make sense immediately?

  • What would you improve?

  • What would make you keep using it (or stop using it)?
