MeltemiFree - Find calm, wind-sheltered beaches in Greece

by
MeltemiFree solves a classic Greek summer nightmare: traveling 45 minutes to a beach only to be sandblasted by 6-Beaufort Meltemi winds and 2-meter waves. Unlike generic weather apps, MeltemiFree uses a vector physics engine that calculates the angular difference between live wind vectors, wave swell height, and a beach's exact coastal facing angle. Features: • 100% Calm shelter percentage • Interactive Leaflet map & GPS • City geocoding & radius search • Pure bilingual EL/EN

Hey Product Hunt community! 👋 I built MeltemiFree out of sheer personal frustration. During Greek summer, seasonal northern winds (the "Meltemi") can ruin a perfectly planned beach day. You get to the coast expecting crystal-clear water, only to be met with 6-Beaufort gusts and rough waves. Standard weather apps only tell you generic wind speeds, but they don't tell you if a specific bay or beach is actually sheltered. So, I decided to code a solution! How it works: MeltemiFree doesn't just display weather data—it runs a vector math model comparing live Open-Meteo wind vectors and wave swell heights against coastal orientation angles. A beach facing away from the wind angle gets calculated as near 100% calm, while an onshore beach gets flagged with high-wave warnings. The Tech & The Story: Built with Next.js 15, React 19, Tailwind v4, Leaflet.js, and OpenStreetMap APIs. Prompting the UI was a breeze, but getting (with the help of AI) to calculate clean angular differences, without hallucinated trigonometry was a fun engineering challenge! It’s 100% free, ad-free, and bilingual (English/Greek). If you're traveling to Greece this summer, test it out and let me know your thoughts! 🏖️☕
