Three monitors on a Mac: why the outer two swap after wake

With three monitors, a common complaint is that the middle one stays put while the left and right ones trade places after every wake. Usually the outer two are the same model, macOS can't tell them apart by serial, and they reconnect in a different order each time. The write-up has two Terminal commands to see each monitor's serial and port, and the fixes that work without an app.
