Mac resets monitor resolution, refresh rate or rotation after sleep

Sometimes it's not the windows: after a wake the monitor is at the wrong scaled resolution, back at 60 Hz, or a portrait screen has turned landscape again. That happens because the monitor disconnects during sleep and macOS has to recognise it again, which goes wrong with identical monitors and some docks. The write-up has a Terminal command to see the resolution and refresh rate macOS is actually using, and the fixes that work without an app.

If you have a portrait monitor or a high refresh one that keeps resetting, I'd like to hear which model.
