How important is data privacy when choosing a business card scanner ?

by•

Hey Product Hunt 👋

We're the team behind KaunTech, and while building the product, we discovered something that surprised us.

Most business card scanning apps process your scans in the cloud. That means every card you scan including names, phone numbers, emails, company details, and sometimes client information is uploaded to external servers for processing.

For many users, that's perfectly fine.

But for businesses dealing with client data, compliance requirements, or simply wanting greater control over their information, it raises an interesting question:

Should a business card scanner require your data to leave your device at all?

That's why we built KaunTech differently.

Our approach was simple:

  • Scan business cards completely offline

  • Process OCR and AI extraction directly on-device

  • Store data locally with encryption

  • Allow users to decide when and where data gets synced

The result is a business card scanner that works even without internet connectivity while keeping sensitive contact information under the user's control.

We're curious:

When evaluating a productivity or business app that handles contact data, what's most important to you?

  • Privacy and data ownership?

  • Accuracy of data extraction?

  • CRM integrations?

  • Speed and convenience?

  • Something else entirely?

Would love to hear how other founders, sales professionals, and operators think about this tradeoff.

Happy to answer questions about the technology, offline AI approach, privacy architecture, or lessons learned while building KaunTech.
