Hi all, I'm Omer, a computer engineer building stuff in my free time
Hi yall,
I'm Omer, a 5-year computer engineer, working full-time in a big international tech company.
The stuff I do for work is great and interesting (I do R&D for AI inference platforms at scale), but I don't fully OWN anything in my day job.
Since I finished uni I have been looking for this sense of ownership and commitment towards my own thing, towards clients and to have my own little baby product I could show off.
Built many pet projects over the years - Unreal Engine game prototypes, trained some cool AI models for medical vision stuff, but never committed to finishing a single thing, bringing it from A to Z - from idea to paying customers.
When I visited the US last year, I met a guy that works in Google and has a whole portfolio of pet projects on the side - each of them generating income. We had a talk, he inspired me greatly, and I decided to just go for it. Started working on the first thing that came to mind - something that I've been wanting to build for a while - an all-in-one app for AI image generation, editing and creation, featuring every AI model I need and every tool I could possibly want. I just grew tired of constantly going back and forth between ComfyUI, Google Flow and GPT, and then merging all of their results in some traditional image editing software.
Promised myself that no matter what, by the time I got married I need to have a first paying customer. Got married in June, zero clients to show. Barely any traffic (Worth mentioning I never felt it was ready enough to start advertising).
Went through a super rough time mentally after the wedding, where I started roaming Reddit.
Found some related subreddits, commented about my app there, and holy shit people actually came in and tried it!
Two months later, hundreds of users have signed up already, I have my first few paying customers and I'm getting ready to launch it here on PH. Super excited about the future. Can't believe people are actually willing to pay for something I made by myself! Still polishing it by getting insights from users, and I'm also about to also start organic advertising with short form videos on YT and TikTok. That's a different challenge for me - I've never been good in social media - never even opened TikTok, barely visited Reddit and I avoid short-form content. But I'm excited about the future.
