Helm - Personal AI agent on your PC that thinks 24/7

by
Helm is a personal AI agent that runs on your hardware with full shell, files, web and screen. Message it from Discord, iMessage or your terminal. Owner-locked, private, runs on any model — your Claude subscription, an API key, or a free local model. Free, self-hosted.

Most AI agents are just chatbots in a browser. They describe what they would do instead of actually doing it. I built Helm because I wanted an agent that could see my screen, run my shell commands, access my files, and actually complete tasks instead of just talking about them. The original idea was syncing devices, but the real insight was that agents need two things to be useful: real access to your hardware, and a way to talk to them that fits how you already work. Discord and iMessage meant I didn't need yet another dashboard to babysit. Running locally meant no cloud APIs slowing things down and no one else seeing your data. The hardest part was figuring out how to let an agent act autonomously without being scary. Started with "ask before every action" mode, then learned that people want to switch to full autonomy once they trust it. Owner-locked it to your Discord ID so it's actually secure. Built in an encrypted vault for credentials and a nightly self-improvement pass that auto-reverts if tests fail. Still learning what people actually want from an agent. Started thinking it would be about automation, but realized people mostly want it for one-off tasks and debugging. Open to feedback on what's missing.
